Historic Fisheries Agreement Reached Between Canada, the Micmac Nation of Gespeg, and Micmacs of Gesgapegiag
June 21, 2023 – In a landmark move that emphasizes our dedication to preserving Indigenous rights, we, the Migmaq of Gesgapegiag and Gespeg, have initiated a partnership with Canada, primarily focused on our commercial fisheries.
On June 2, 2023, an agreement on fisheries was signed, marking a new chapter in the history of our relationship with the Government of Canada, the Micmac Nation of Gespeg, and the Micmacs of Gesgapegiag. This agreement, slated for renewal every seven years, guarantees funding for the acquisition of access, vessels, and gear while outlining responsibilities and regulations for fisheries management activities.
This agreement recognizes the inherent rights of the Gespeg and Gesgapegiag communities to harvest and sell fish. It further initiates the establishment of collaborative management structures, allowing us to actively participate in decision-making processes impacting our fisheries.
Regarded as a significant step towards more transformative changes, this agreement aims to ensure a larger role for the Gespeg and Gesgapegiag communities in commercial fisheries and in the sustainable management of resources. The goal is to create a stable environment for a prosperous and sustainable fishery for all harvesters in the region.
The Chiefs Executive would like to acknowledge the MMS Agnutasnemu for their steady contribution and dedication in advancing the interests of our communities one success at a time
